That’s exactly what happened to Highland Park chef Darren, whose busy day took an "incredible" turn when he was told he had the winning ticket!
10 or 15 minutes’ worth of convincing later... "I told everyone in the kitchen, we grabbed a sixpack from downstairs and celebrated and called the wife on speakerphone."
"I thought he was having me on," Darren’s wife, Jodine, says. "There was lots of, 'Oh my God, are you serious? Oh my God, are you serious?'
"There were tears, there was jumping, there was shock and there was shaking! It was a real surreal moment."
The $3 million dream choice
Would you take the keys to a breathtaking three-bedroom Gold Coast apartment with panoramic ocean views, or would you take $3 million in gold?
Darren, Jodine and their two boys now have that $3 million choice to make. And whichever they choose, they’ll pocket an extra $50,000 in gold for purchasing a $50 ticket book!
"We were leaning towards the [$3 million] gold," says Darren. "But now that we've seen the house… The house is beautiful. The view is spectacular. We’re going to have to have a serious think about it. It's a tough, tough decision."
Darren describes the win as "life changing".
"It's going to give us freedom, choices and set our kids up. We can take the time to enjoy life and do things that we want to do and not that we have to do."
All for a good cause
A VIP Club member since July 2020, Darren has been buying a $50 ticket book each month to help our deserving veterans.
"In the end I was like, it's going to a good cause. These people that have done great for our country – if it feeds someone or houses someone, I can afford to put $50 towards that."
"We do that rather than buy a lotto ticket," Jodine explains, "and look what's happened!"
"Somebody's got to win it!" Darren says. "We're proof of that."
